Rocky’s Beach Bar has been called one of Grenada’s “best kept secrets” and it’s not hard to see why. The place is hard to find, the opening hours are limited, and it seems to go out of its way to avoid promoting itself (at least to certain audiences). But for those who do find it and manage to arrive when it’s open, it doesn’t take long to figure out that you’ve stumbled across something special.

Located in Morne Rouge, Rocky’s has perfected the art of hiding in plain sight. Entry from BBC Beach is via a gate – don’t look for a sign, there isn’t one on the beach side – partially obscured by trees. When you do arrive, you’ll find a compact, airy wooden structure with comfortable seating, a laid-back vibe and, most importantly, its ever-present manager.

There is no doubt that this is Rocky’s establishment. After all, he built it (and rebuilt it after the most recent hurricane) and his personality is infused into every inch of the place. And that means running things his way, including the unpredictable opening hours, which are generally Saturdays and Sundays from noon and, occasionally, the odd day during the week… or not. “It depends on what I feel like and if my scooter starts,” Rocky explained on our last visit.

What you won’t find are crowds of cruise ship tourists on bus or boat tours of the island. That’s not who Rocky is after. “Don’t worry, they’re not coming here,” he assured me as such a boat obliviously passed us by on their way further down the beach. The clientele here is generally locals and tourists in-the-know. Most are repeat visitors.

The vibe here is decidedly easy going. If you want a drink, you can easily get one from the friendly, efficient staff. If you just want to chill quietly, that’s fine too. For some, that may not be enough. But if you like things low and slow, this could be your place. Oh, and if you need to refresh, you are literally steps away from one of Grenada’s most appealing beaches.

What will you have?

Beer: Carib and Stag are the go-to’s here, and in Grenada in general. I have a suspicion that there is Corona, Heineken and maybe a few others, but I didn’t see anyone order them. Local shandies are popular.

Rum/Cocktails: Grenadian rums from Clarkes Court and Westerhall are the stars here, with the Westerhall 10XO holding the top spot. There’s a good lineup of island cocktails and Rocky’s Rum Punch and Pina Coladas are both highly touted.

Food: Food, when it’s served, is typical island barbecue – hearty and flavourful. Chicken and local seafood feature prominently.

Asides

OK, so let’s be honest, Rocky’s may not be for everyone. For a start, it’s opening times can drive you to distraction. Some people find the regular patrons a bit cliquey, while others rave about its friendly, welcoming atmosphere. We are firmly in the later camp.

Reflections… 

If you like traditional, no nonsense, fun and funky beach bars, Grenada is blessed with some great ones. And, personally, I’d rate Rocky’s as one of the best of a solid bunch.
