A tough job, but someone has to do it. Sampling one of the many fine award-winning Grenadian rums at Clarke’s Court, the island’s premier distillery. They make molasses-based rums using traditional methods dating back to the company’s almost century-old origins. As you can see, their line up is extensive (and no, I didn’t try them all - it was 9:00 am, after all 😅). My favourite? Black Gold, a smooth aged dark rum subtlety infused with nutmeg, Grenada’s most famous spice (It’s even on their flag). Time to hit the beach again! All things being well, I will be back in the islands in a few days. This time it will be the beautiful nation of Grenada🇬🇩, a destination we’ve been wanting to return to for a long time. Unfortunately, we will just miss Grenada Independence Day on February 7th but, who knows, maybe we will be able share in some residual celebrations. Will be a very welcome break from the sub zero temperatures of the last month or so. A bit of a #fridayflashback. My first ever trip to the Caribbean was to Barbados🇧🇧 way back in the 80’s. I knew right away that the islands were going to play a big part in my life. So it was only fitting that Barbados was the first island my wife and I visited together, an incredible 29 years ago now. I’m happy to say that she fell in love with the Caribbean as much as I did. We’ve been hooked ever since. On that first holiday we stayed at Southern Palms Beach Club & Resort in St. Lawrence Gap. We had a great time. So when we returned to Barbados last year, we decided to take a trip down memory lane and paid a return visit. We have just booked our first trip of the year and I am excited to say we are returning to the beautiful island of Grenada 🇬🇩 after more than 12 years. That’s just too long! Really looking forward to our visit - in exactly one month from today (all being well). I’m sure there have been many exciting developments during that time. Already have a few beach bars lined up, both old favourites and new ones (to us, anyway) - Umbrellas, Esther’s, La Plywood, Savvy’s - and always open to recommendations. 😎 Also looking forward to a strolling around one of the Caribbean’s most picturesque capitals. (And I will be remembering the kind, calm, reassuring Grenadian oncology nurse at Humber River Hospital in Toronto, who made my difficult chemotherapy so much easier to take. Around this time last year we were just getting ready for a trip to Eleuthera in the Bahamas 🇧🇸. We managed to visit a few great islands this year, even one that wasn’t even in our plans😅. On the way I picked up a few new favourites. So, in keeping with the year-end list thingy, here’s my ‘Top Five New Faves of 2024’. No science or strict criteria behind this list. Just my selection of the favourite things we came across for the first time this year.

Favourite new hotel: Cobbler’s Cove, Barbados. Classic old school elegance with a relaxed, friendly vibe. Ideally situated in a particularly lovely part of the island. @cobblerscovehotel

Favourite new cocktail bar: Bon Vivants, Nassau, Bahamas. Truly creative, well-crafted cocktails in a charming ‘vibey’ setting. These guys know their stuff. One of the most original cocktail lists I’ve ever come across. @bonvivantsbahamas

Favourite new island song: ‘Ancient Wisdom’ by Olaide Banks, Anguilla. An easy choice for me. The best way to get it is simply to give it a listen. Available on most streaming services. @olaidebanks

Favourite new shop: The Olive Tree, Nevis. ‘The’ place to pick up affordable works by local artists, expertly curated by the engaging proprietress. You’ll be sure to find something to take home. And the prices are more than reasonable. @theolivetreenevis

Favourite new beach bar/restaurant: Sea Shed, Barbados. A terrific location, imaginative layout and excellent food. And the staff make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. Have to try their XO Rum Old Fashioned, made with fine Bajan rum. @seashed_barbados

An exciting first for me! No, not the martini, I’ve had more than my fair share of those, I’m afraid. During my career I’ve been the editor of hundreds of magazines and journals, but this is the first book - and work of fiction - I’ve ever edited. It’s the debut novel by my cousin, Sandra, in Sussex in the UK. It’s a breezy rom-com set during the pandemic. Not my usual choice of reading material, I must admit (though I have read it eight times😅), but I really enjoyed the challenge of editing a novel, as well as supervising the talented art and production team on both sides of the Atlantic (love that cover - thanks, Joe). I am really proud of the final product. My cousin, who works full-time for the National Health Service, had talked about writing a book for decades. I always thought she had it in her and, finally, here it is. So, here’s to staying true to your dreams, stepping outside your comfort zone and always being open to challenging yourself. Still there is lots to think about on a sunny late morning in Grand Case, St. Martin. I originally posted this ‘artwork’ of mine a few months ago. Unfortunately, however, it suffered significant water damage during the summer. My first reaction was to throw up my arms, toss it and walk away. But the 28 or so years I spent visiting these places and the great memories we have of them - many of the most famous and best beach bars in the Caribbean - wouldn’t let me. So, I painstaking removed, repaired and/or replaced the damaged ones and here we are - Beach Bar Bingo Take Two. 11th November, Remembrance Day, is a time to honou

11th November, Remembrance Day, is a time to honour those who served - and the all too many who died - in the service of their countries during the two World Wars. There are so many stories to share. Take this gentleman, for example. As a lieutenant in the 13th Field Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery, he landed on Juno Beach on D Day. Before the day was through, he was hit by six machine gun bullets; four in the leg, one almost severing his right middle finger (which later had to be amputated) and one, miraculously, bouncing off a metal cigarette case in his chest pocket. After convalescing in England, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he took on the dangerous job of flying unarmed observation aircraft for the duration of the war, at one point earning the label of “the craziest pilot in the RCAF”. Luckily for us, Lt. James Doohan survived the war and went on to play the much loved ‘Scotty’ in the original Star Trek. He never boasted about his wartime experiences.
