Happy Global James Bond Day! And yes, it is a thin

Happy Global James Bond Day! And yes, it is a thing. Dr. No, the first 007 film, was released on this day (October 5th) way back in 1962. That’s right, 60 years ago! I will admit to being hooked since (surreptitiously) seeing my first Bond film at age nine and reading my first novel two years later (resulting in a few raised eyebrows in the family). I’ve been a fan and a bit of a collector ever since. Mr. Bond was even responsible for introducing me to the Caribbean, a place both he and his creator, Ian Fleming, loved - particularly Jamaica🇯🇲 and the Bahamas🇧🇸. I’m forever grateful for that, if nothing else. Have to admit that I am a frustrated beach bum😎🏖. OK, so maybe not that frustrated. I’ve been fortunate enough to bum around some of the Caribbean’s best beaches, like this one - Pigeon Point Beach in the English Harbour area of Antigua🇦🇬. That could mean a number of things: sunbathing, swimming, enjoying the view, just strolling along the sand or searching for my personal Holy Grail, the perfect beach bar. A combination #flashbackfriday and #nationaldogday salute to the irreplaceable Cindy, my one and only dog. Cindy, a mutt (part Labrador and part terrier), was only a puppy and I was very young when we emigrated to Canada🇨🇦 from England🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 way back when. But she was the one thing my brother and I insisted on bringing with us - even offering to sell all our toys. So glad we did. Cindy gave us continuity, support and unconditional love in an often frightening new world. She lived another 15 years in Canada. Been gone for a long, long time now. Something a little different. A salute to #thirstythursday with my nomination for Cocktail of the Month🍹. This tempting libation is called Enter the Dragon. It’s a spin on the mojito and contains Plantation 3 Star rum, blueberry syrup, pitaya syrup (I hadn’t heard of it either - a kind of dragonfruit), habanero tincture, lime and mint. Topped off with a somewhere dangerous looking garnish🥵. Delish! Still a couple of months away from our next trip to the islands, so I spent a few lovely days with family enjoying the bounty of nature available closer to my home in Toronto🇨🇦. And I certainly wasn’t disappointed. I took these two images - a spectacular sunset and a sublime moonrise - within just a couple of hours of each other. Both were taken from the end of the same dock on Balsam Lake in the Kawarthas, just a two hour drive northeast of the city. Places I’d rather be right now #61: Marooned on an uncharted desert island🏝. OK, so it’s not really an island, and it’s certainly not uncharted😁. It’s Sandy Spit, located between Jost Van Dyke and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands🇻🇬. This magical little place was a stop on our @windstarcruises trip a few years back. This was as close as our ship could get, so it dropped anchor and invited passengers to swim ashore. Many did, including my wife (much braver and a far better swimmer than me). Places I’d rather be right now #61: Arriving for lunch at Catherine’s Café, a sophisticated beachside restaurant on Pigeon Point Beach, English Harbour, Antigua🇦🇬. Whether you are just there for one of their creative cocktails (I had an excellent Mescalita🍹), or to sample their impressive French-inspired menu, you have to admit that the setting ‘sur la plage’ is hard to beat. I have to say the English Harbour area is one of our favourite places to spend some time in Antigua. In addition to Pigeon Point Beach, there is a diverse choice of good bars and restaurants, along with quaint accommodations. We begin with Piton from, you guessed it, St. Lucia (Ladera Resort, Soufrière). Next up is Pacifico from Mexico🇲🇽 (Esencia Hotel, Mayan Riviera). And last, but not least, we have Carib from Kitts & Nevis🇰🇳 (Lime Beach Bar, Pinney’s Beach, Nevis). P.S. I actually managed to pick up a case of Carib here in Toronto for our annual Canada Day🇨🇦 BBQ tomorrow (July 1st). I love to watch good bartenders doing their thing. And the bartender at the Beach Bar at the Hotel Esencia on the Mayan Riviera in Mexico🇲🇽 was an excellent one. After listening to him chat knowledgeably about tequila, mezcal and lesser known Mexican spirits, such as sotol, raicilla and bacaonora (with a few samples along the way), we retired to take in the view from the upper deck and left him to work on a bartender’s choice cocktail - which turned out to be a spicy Mezcal mango margarita with chili lime🌶🍈.
