The name applies to a single island as well as a surrounding group of small islands in the Bahamas. Eleuthera may be close to the Bahamian capital of Nassau, but it might as well be on another planet. The main island can be reached by a 15-minute flight or a roughly 2 ½ hour ferry ride from Nassau. Direct fights are also available from some US locations (though most passengers tend to be heading straight for Harbour Island).
Even the main island of Eleuthera is small, but it is blessed with great secluded beaches, fabulous vistas, a few very good resorts and nice restaurants and beach bars. The pace is slow and there is a terrific sense of calm on the island. Eleuthera is really a place to chill. But if you crave something more upscale or lively, just hop on a water taxi for the five-minute ride to glitzy Harbour Island.
